Setting up geotargeting for your Max Media Manager installation is really easy. If you know how.
I run into several traps, but with help from the pros on #max (freenode) i was able to get it running. Thanks to ChrisNutting and Spritz for their great help!
Here is the cooking instruction:
- download the database from maxmind:
wget http://www.maxmind.com/download/geoip/database/GeoIP.dat.gz
and unzip it. - login to MMM, go to the "settings" dialog and choose "Geotargeting Settings"
- choose "MaxMind GeoIP"
- input your path/to/GeoIP.dat in the first input field called "MaxMind GeoIP Country Database Location". If you leave it blank MMM tries to find it in some default locations.
Putting in a path is more secure and reduces the filesystem checks. - Be sure to uncheck the "Show geotargeting delivery limitations even if GeoIP data unavailable" checkbox at the bottom of this settings page. Otherwise you see also unavailable delivery limitation settings (e.g. country/region) and MMM won't serve your banner as the db for this limitation isn't available.
- now you only have to add hot water, e.g. go to a banner and add some delivery limitations. You can choose for "continent" and for "country", which is pretty much for the beginning.
